FENNEL SEED ESSENTIAL OIL
Described as a sweet, floral top-middle note with an herbaceous spicy undertone, essential oil of fennel is energizing, stimulating, warming, and eases fear. It is used widely in perfumes and to scent haircare products. Essential oil of fennel is also often used in toothpastes and mouthwashes.
The seeds of fennel are used for their anti-inflammatory, deep-cleansing, detoxifying, revitalizing, antimicrobial and circulatory stimulant properties. The active constituents of fennel seed include: terpenes, fatty acids, protein, flavonoids, phenolcarboxylic acids and coumarins. Best for normal to dry and mature skin, fennel seed is used in facial steams, cleansers, soaps, anti-wrinkle creams and lotions. It also helps to calm unevenly colored or blotchy skin. A cool fennel seed tea compress is used to reduce puffiness on closed swollen eyes and as a tonic for chapped skin. Fennel is used in salves to heal bruises.
ABOUT THE PLANT
Sweet Fennel essential oil is a wonderful aromatic from the crushed seeds of this common spice. Sweet fennel is a biennial or perennial herb growing up to 6 feet high with feathery leaves and brilliant crowns of gold flowers. Of unknown origin, it was planted on the island of Malta by monks or crusaders a few thousand years ago. Currently, Sweet Fennel is principally grown in France, Italy and Greece.
A tall, feathery Medidterranean her, fennel loves to grow by the sea. It is called “licorice plant” because of its taste and smell.
Biennial or perennial herb up to 2m (6ft) high, with feathery leaves and golden yellow flowers. There are two main varieties of fennel: bitter or common fennel, slightly taller with less divided leaves occurring in a cultivated or wild form; and sweet fennel (also known as Roman, garden or French fennel), which is always cultivated.
Bitter fennel oil should not be used on the skin at all, although it is considered superior medicinally. Neither oil should be used by epileptics or during pregnancy.
