As well as having a balancing effect on the mind, this uplifting essential oil has a great all-over balancing property that also extends to the skin, where it helps to create balance between oily and dry skin. An astringent that is not dying, Geranium is soothing to the mucus membranes of the skin. Balancing the sebum production (the fatty acid secretions of the sebaceous glands) of the skin, Geranium helps to cleanse the skin as well as to restore balance, tone, and suppleness.
Geranium has great value in skin care and can be used on any type of skin. Properties for skin include: analgesic, anti-irritant, antimicrobial, potent antioxidant, antiseptic, astringent, balancing, cell-regenerating, cicatrisant, demulcent, rejuvenating and warming. It is commonly used for these particular skin conditions: acne, blackheads, cellulite, dehydration, erythema, seborrhea, sensitivity, spider veins and stretch marks. Geranium is also an excellent and effective remedy for burns and wounds and can be used in the treatment of inflammation due to its mild, soothing effect. Its action on the nervous system is pronounced; it’s a sedative with uplifting characteristics. Geranium is a stimulant of the adrenal cortex and can be used to balance the production of androgens or octoroons, such as occurs during menopause. It is also great for the time of menstruation. Geranium is a good insecticide due to its terpene content and is particularly effective as a mosquito repellent. Described as a minty-fruity floral top-middle note with rosy undertones, geranium oil is an important perfume ingredient, and one of the most feminine of the essential oils. Its properties for mind include: balancing, calming, cooling, refreshing, relaxing, soothing and uplifting. It promotes feelings of happiness and peace, and eases anxiety, depression, panic, stress and tension.
ABOUT THE PLANT
Often planted around the home for protection, beauty, and aroma, Geranium is a familiar perennial shrub that grows in stands between three four feet high in herb gardens. The shrub has pointed leaves that are serrated at the edges and hosts delightful pink to white flowers. The name Geranium derives from the Greek word geranos or ‘crane’ because the seed pods resemble the shape of crane’s bills.
perennial, shrubby, hairy plant growing up to 1m (3ft) high with fragrant leaves
Also known as Rose Geranium and Pelargonium
There are several types of geranium oil produced from cultivated forms, varieties and hybrids of the Pelargonium species. The main species are P. capitum, P. graveolens, P. radens and P. odorantissimum. Bourbon geranium is produced from the cultivar Rose, which is a hybrid of P. capitum and P. radens, and is commonly known as P. graveolens.
There is a great deal of confusion over the origins of geranium; Not surprising considering that there are over 250 natural species, hundreds of hybrids and thousands of cultivars.
The plants originated from South Africa, as well as Egypt, Madagascar, and Morocco, and were introduced to European countries such as Italy, Spain and France in the 17th century. Although there are nearly 700 different varieties of Geranium only ten of these supply essential oil in viable quantities and only the scented varieties of Pelargonium are used for the essential oil. Geranium essential oil was first distilled in 1819 for use in the French perfume industry for ‘rose geranium oil’. Three main regions produce essential oil: Reunion (Bourbon), Egypt and Russia
ABOUT THE OIL
There are in fact two species of Pelargonium distilled to essential oil: this 'odorantissium' species which produces Rose Geranium oil, high in geraniol with a more rose-like aroma, and the 'graveolens' species which produces an oil with a higher citronellol content and correspondingly citrus-like aroma. This essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowers of wild grown Rose Geranium plants grown in Albania.
Best when steam distilled, Geranium essential oil is a great balancer. Use confidently in blends to balance the heaven and earth qualities of other oils.
Our Geranium essential oil is steam distilled from the tops and flowers of plants organically grown South Africa. The oil is a light 'peridot' green with an aroma that is rich, almost “spicy, incredibly fresh, complex and full-bodied. It is also a sub-species of Pelargonium graviolens, called "x asperum", especially known for it's anti-microbial properties. \greenish-olive to almost brownish green color which fades and becomes more yellow when old.
There are in fact two species of Pelargonium distilled to essential oil: 'graveolens', which is the common Geranium, and 'odorantissium' or 'Rose Geranium' oil. Rose Geranium is high in geraniol with a more rose-like aroma than this 'graveolens' species that produces an oil with a higher citronellol content, and a correspondingly more citrus-noted aroma.

Harmonic and balancing, Geranium can be used for spiritual practice and meditation as it assists one in connecting to the intuition and wisdom messages of the heart. This naturally lead to an increased capacity for intimate and open communication between body, mind, and spirit.
Geranium essential oil has the quality of equalizing hormonal and emotional extremes. Known familiarly as the ‘flower of constancy’, Geranium helps to lift the spirits and helps to bring joy and happiness to one’s daily activity.
Known for its support in releasing negative and dis-harmonious memories, Geranium eases nervous tension and stress and is balancing to the emotions, thus lifting the spirits, and fostering a sense of peace and well-being. Indicated for those who feel the downward spiral of depression and for those whose lives are ‘lacking color’, the essential oil is celebrated for its ability to lift worry and anxiety.
