ABOUT THE PLANT
The olive, known by the botanical name Olea europaea, meaning 'European olive", is a species of small tree in the family Oleaceae. It is found in the Mederranean Basin, the Arabian Peninsula and southern Asia as far east as China (and some islands).
The best oil comes from fruit wchich is nearly ripe and hand picked.
ABOUT THE OIL
Olive oil is made from pressing ripe olives.
It is one of the best mediums for herb-infused oils intended for medicinal applications, such as in salves or suppositories.
Excellent stability and can be stored without refrigeration for a year.
The oil itself comes from the pulp, not the kernel, and mills have to crush the fruit gently so that the stone does not fracture. The oil is separated by centrifuging, and filtered for purity – this is true “virgin olive oil”.
Pure olive oil has excellent stability and can be stored without refrigeration for a year.
Olive oil is extracted from the fruit of the European olive tree. ‘Virgin’ means the oil was produced by the use of physical means only - no chemical was involved. The term virgin oil referring to production is different from “Virgin Oil” on a retail label. Extra-virgin olive oil comes from the first pressing of the olives, contains no more than 0.8% acidity, and is judged to have a superior taste. There can be no refined oil in extra-virgin olive oil. This emollient plant oil has anti-aging properties and contains saponins. Some tests show that topically applied olive oil can protect against UVB damage. It is a good antioxidant as well as a good moisturizer. In penetrating power it is superior to mineral oils. Many soaps, creams, anti-wrinkle products and massage oils include olive oil as an ingredient. See natural moisturizing factors.
Olive oil has a long history in beauty care, being used as a simple moisturizer and hair conditioner. The "extra" means that the oil is from a single source, and the "virgin" indicates the first pressing of the fruit which richest in phytonutrients. This rich oil is excellent for very dry, normal, sensitive and sun-damaged skin. It is deeply penetrating and rich in vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidants due to its high vitamin E content. Olive oil is a very well-loved ingredient in body lotions, soaps, and other body care products. It may be blended with other oils and has a good texture for massage.
Of course, Olive oil is the perfect dressing for salads and is good for cooking with low heat.
OF INTEREST
The olive is traditionally regarded as a symbol of peace. The ancient Greeks wore garlands of olive leaves in their hair as they prayed for peace. Historically, Olive oil has been the base for anointing oils, such blends including frankincense, myrrh and sandalwood.
