  • ABOUT THE PLANT

Hippophae rhamnoides, also known as 'Sandthorn' and 'Seaberry', is a native species to Europe and Asia (particularly India and China). Sea Buckthorn is a hardy, cold-resistant shrub with spiny branches. It is undemanding and will thrive in poor soils, colonizing quickly any open space such as sand dunes and mountainous areas.

Despite the poor soil conditions this bush enjoys, the edible orange berries are one of the richest sources of natural vitamins A, C, E - hence the nickname given to the plant 'ACE'. It is also a rich source of vitamin B, carotenes, essential fatty acids (omega 3, 7, 6 & 9), flavonoids and other beneficial components. The berries are bright orange and have a sour taste, and it is said they contain 30 times more vitamin C than an orange.

    ABOUT THE OIL

The extract is made using a carbon dioxide extraction from the ripe berries of Sea Buckthorn plants. The carbon dioxide distillation process allows all the fatty acids, minerals and vitamins from the berries to flow, unaltered by heat or pressure, into the concentrated extract. This is how Sea Buckthorn CO2 oil provides an unsurpassed natural source of vitamins A , E, B1, B2, K and P, carotenes, flavonoids, tocopherols, essential fatty acids and phytosterols.

It's deep red color indicates a high amount of carotenoids and other potent antioxidants that add to its excellent therapeutics.

    OF INTEREST

Herbalists have used sea buckthorn berry for millennia. Today bio-active substances in the oil derived from the seed and pulp are used in a variety of dermatological applications, among them anti-aging face creams, lotions and sun care products (since the extract seems to absorb UV rays). Research indicates that products containing sea buckthorn berry appear to promote cell regeneration, thus aiding in the healing of wounds and restoring skin tissue. Clinical experiments indicate that cosmetics containing sea buckthorn extracts can actually improve cell metabolism and retard skin maturation, thus slowing the aging process, possibly because of the effects of its high levels of vitamins A and E. Sea buckthorn oil has been proven effective in the treatment of the following skin conditions: acne, burns, skin ulcers and dermatitis of various forms.

The therapeutic properties of Sea Buckthorn oil are directly ascribed to its chemical makeup, so it’s worth delving into it’s chemistry a little more:

It contains very high amounts of naturally occurring vitamin C, a vitamin crucial to smoother and more youthful looking skin because of its ability to penetrate the dermis.

Significant levels of vitamin E, also a very important vitamin for the health and youthfulness of the skin, are also present.

Pro-vitamin A, a carotenoid found in high concentration, encourages skin cell proliferation. The oil also has high amounts of many anti-oxidants, and not only delivers their protective effects to your skin, but has an exceptionally long shelf life.

In fact, the holy trinity of anti-aging vitamins – A, C, and E – have such a high concentration in this plant it has been given the nickname 'ACE'.

This CO2 extract also has a high content of vitamins B1, B2, K and P, carotenoids, flavonoids, essential fatty acids, phytosterols.

Palmitoleic acid, a component of the the oil, is a component of skin tissue

  • Sea buckthorn oil is likely the premier essential oil for skin health in therapeutic aromatherapy. Skin care products made of Sea Buckthorn are valued for their rejuvenating and restorative actions as well as retardation of the aging process of the skin.
