ABOUT THE PLANT
Derived from the Greek word 'thumus' meaning 'courage', Thyme is a perennial evergreen shrub with small, stalky stems sprouting small, grey-green fragrant leaves and pale purple flowers. The linalool chemotype is reputedly the most gentle and is native to the sun-exposed Spanish hills and the rocky banks of the Mediterranean sea.
ABOUT THE OIL
Thyme c.t. linalool essential oil is wonderful for supporting the immune system. The oil is anti-infectious, and can be used in the long term to support health. It is gentle but powerful and can be used with children.
The essential oil is mainly located in small glands on the leaves and contains thymol, paracymene and linalool. It is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves and flowering tops of the plants.
OF INTEREST
Thyme is one of the earliest medicinal plants in Western herbal medicine.
Roman soldiers soaked in a bath infused with Thyme oil before battle to absorb its physical healing and spiritually courageous properties.
The Middle Ages saw Thyme prescribed for a wide range of ailments including: paralysis, leprosy, body lice and as a general antimicrobial and antiviral tonic used externally and internally.
As time progressed, the uses of Thyme oil became more broad spectrum. It was employed in pre and post-surgical dressings, to prevent and kill the yellow fever virus (transmitted by mosquitoes) during WWI. More recently, its antioxidant properties have been explored regarding natural food preservation.
Linalool is a softer, non-irritating variety of the thyme plant (from the terpene alcohol linalool content). Active constituents of thyme include: terpenes such as thymol (named for the plant), phenols, labiate tannins and flavonoids. Thyme is so powerful that during World War I it was used to disinfect soldiers’ wounds. It is also included in anti-dandruff products such as shampoos, conditioners and hair rinses and helps keep hair dark and silky.
