  • ROMAN CHAMOMILE

Anthemis nobilis, or Chamaemelum nobile, is a pleasant-smelling perennial with feathery, fern-like leaves and branched, creeping stems topped by small, daisy-like flowers. A smaller herbal plant with larger flowers than that of German Chamomile, Roman Chamomile, also known as: English chamomile, Garden chamomile, Sweet chamomile, is native to Western Europe and widely cultivated in England, Belgium, Italy, France, Hungary, and the United States. The whole plant has a distinct scent, reminiscent of sweet apples'; Its common name is derived from the Greek word chamaimelon – chamai meaning on the ground, and melon an apple. Its botanical name, Anthemis is derived from the Greek word anthos which means a flower. The plant’s specific name of nobilis means noble or noted – referring to its healing powers.

    ABOUT THE OIL

A pale blue mobile liquid that turns yellow with age, Roman chamomile essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the flower heads. The various types of chamomile are all antidepressants and anti-inflammatory; all treat burns, eczema and skin irritation. Roman Chamomile Oil is used extensively in Europe for the skin, increasing the ability of the skin to regenerate. It is similar to Blue 'German' Chamomile in this respect, though with a lesser anti-inflammatory effect. The two essential oils are quite different chemically.

Roman Chamomile essential oil is a miracle worker; it is highly sought after for its remarkable calming effects and can impart its soothing effects in exceptionally small amounts. This makes it one of the best oils for children alongside Mandarin and Lavender.

Steam distilled chamomile oil is, when fresh, a deep ink-blue, somewhat viscous liquid.

    OF INTEREST

In preparation for passing to spirit, a variety of chamomile was used on the body of Rameses II in 1224 B.C. – possibly as a scented oil and in Tutankhamen’s tomb, ten statues of the gods were garlanded with leaves and flowers, including mayweed, a type of chamomile, whose Latin name is Anthemis pseudocotula.

The herb has had a medicinal reputation in the Mediterranean region for over 2000 years, and is still in widespread use throughout the world. Medieval monks planted this species on the raised “healing beds” they made in their gardens for invalids to lie upon to relieve depression.

  • While Roman chamomile shares similar properties with German chamomile and to some extent Cape chamomile, their chemical profiles are very different.
