  • ABOUT THE PLANT

Lemongrass is a fast growing, tall, tufted, aromatic perennial grass with numerous stiff stems arising from a short rhizomatous rootstock that grows up to 1.5 meters (4 feet) in height. The planting of Lemongrass is thought to 'heal the Earth' by its absorption and breakdown of toxic products in the soil.

Confusingly, Lemongrass essential oil is produced from two distinctly different botanical species: Cymbopogon flexuosus, also called “native lemongrass”, or “East Indian Lemongrass” where it grows wild, is now only cultivated over a limited area in the Western parts of India; and Cymbopogon citratus, possibly a native of Ceylon and parts of East India, is now widely distributed all over the world and known (ironically) as “West Indian Lemongrass”.

    ABOUT THE OIL

Steam distilled from fresh or partly dried leaves of Cymbopogon citratus or Cymbopogon flexuosus, Lemongrass essential oil is a yellow or amber-colored somewhat viscous liquid. It is one of the 10 largest essential oils in the world with respect to annual volume produced, most of which goes into the production of essential oil constituent citral for perfumery or flavor use or for pharmaceutical use in the synthesis of vitamin A. However, lemongrass essential oil itself is not used very extensively in perfumes and not at all in flavors.

    OF INTEREST

In Asia, Lemongrass was originally used as a food flavoring then as a medicine in TCM. In India, it is an important medicine for Ayurveda. Fresh leaves are crushed in water and used as a hair wash and as toilet water as well. Lemongrass leaves can also be used as a source of cellulose and paper production.
