  • ABOUT THE PLANT

The name Melaleuca is derived from the Greek word melos (dark, black) and leukon (white), first given to the original species with its white papery bark and black lower trunk.

Melaleuca alternifolia, is an extremely hardy native Australian species (the smallest of the tea tree family) that typically only reaches 7-10 feet tall and has constantly exfoliating bark and soft, fragrant , narrow evergreen leaves and yellowish flowers the shape of bottlebrushes. This tree is so hardy that when cut down, it will quickly regrow from the stump. Originally only from Australia, tea tree, along with many eucalyptus species, have been successfully transplanted to South Africa.

    ABOUT THE OIL

Tea tree essential oil is a pale yellowish-green to almost clear liquid with a warm, spicy aroma. It is distilled from the leaves of what appears as a tall grass.

Tea Tree oil is one of the most extensively researched of all the essential oils. It is unusual in its effectiveness against all three types of infectious organisms: bacteria, fungi and viruses. And is a very powerful immuno-stimulant so that when the body is threatened, Tea Tree essential oil increases its ability to respond.

The oil is now well known in natural medicine for its antimicrobial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal effects. Some of its immune supportive properties may be a result of its anti-depressant effects, as one's emotional well-being has a significant impact on the body's ability to resist infection. Tea Tree essential oil can also help soothe insect bites, but is even better used as an insect repellent; one aromatherapist claims Tea Tree is the best she's ever used. A must for the traveler's medicine kit.

Tea Tree oil is also great for enhancing home cleanliness. It can be added to your household cleansers to amplify their purifying action or used directly for a more powerful effect.

    OF INTEREST

Considered a weed by the rest of the world, the Australian Aborigines long ago realized the importance of this small tree's healing attributes. The Aborigines in northeastern New South Wales have used tee tree as a healing herb for many generations. They make a poultice of the leaves to treat skin infections, cuts and wounds.

In 1923 an Australian government scientist, Dr. A. R. Penfold, conducted a study of Tea Tree essential oil and discovered it to be 12 times more potent as an antiseptic bactericide than carbolic acid (the standard at the time). Tea Tree oil became recognized, according to the British Medical Journal in 1933, as 'a powerful disinfectant, non-poisonous and non-irritating'.

After being introduced to Europe in the late 1920s, Tea Tree essential oil was included in the medical kits of the military in World War II due to its excellent antiseptic and immuno-stimulant properties.
