ABOUT THE PLANT
Citrus aurantium var. amara, aka Bitter Orange, is an evergreen tree with long but not sharp spine and blossoms that are small, white and very fragrant. Native to southern China and India but well adapted to the Mediteranean climate, its major producers now include Italy, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, USA, and France.
ABOUT THE OIL
Also known as Orange Flower oil and Neroli Bigarade, Neroli essential oil is produced from blossoms of the Bitter Orange, or Seville tree, and is very precious – it takes one ton of orange blossoms to produce just one quart of oil. And the bitter orange flowers must be distilled immediately after being picked in order to avoid decay and the ensuing unpleasant off-notes. The pale-yellow mobile oil, which tends to become darker and more viscous with age, is produced by water distillation, as the blossom is too fragile to endure steam distillation. Its high cost is a direct result of these. This varietal serves enormous importance to the essential oil industry as it produces three important oils: Neroli, steam-distilled from only the blossoms; Petitgrain oil steam distilled from the twigs and leaves; and Bitter Orange oil, obtained by pressing the rind.
The oil is also edible.
OF INTEREST
Highly regarded by ancient Egyptians for its ability to heal the body, mind, and spirit, the bitter orange was first cultivated in the Mediterranean by Arabs in the 10th and 11th centuries and its essential oil first distilled in the early 16th century. By the end of the 16th century, Anne Marie Orsini, duchess of Bracciano and princess of Nerola, introduced the essence of the bitter orange tree as a fashionable fragrance by using it to perfume her gloves and her bath. Since then, the name of “Neroli” has been used to describe this beautiful essence.
Being one of the key essential oils in the classic Eau de Cologne (with Lavender, Bergamot, Lemon and Rosemary), it has a long history in aromatherapy use as a tonic to gently calm the nervous system.
Today Neroli essential oil is widely used in perfumery, skincare, and in blends to help promote relaxation and relieve stress.

PERFUMERY
Neroli oil is a classic element in fragrance design and one of the most commonly used in the industry. It is one of the key essential oils in the classic Eau de Cologne, which was valued as a gentle tonic to the nervous system. Next to Rose, Jasmin and Ylang-Ylang, it is probably one of the most frequently used “florals” in perfumery.
