  • ABOUT THE PLANT

The word 'Melissa' is Greek for 'Honey Bee', as this perennial herb was planted near beehives to promote complex notes in honey production. Melissa officinalis is a sweet-scented perennial herb and reaches heights of 23 inches with with bright green serrated leaves and tiny white or pink flowers. Also known as 'Lemon Balm' and 'Bee Balm', Melissa is a native to the Mediterranean region and is now in abundant cultivation throughout the world. It is cultivated mainly in Hungary, Egypt, Ireland and Italy.

    ABOUT THE OIL

A pale-yellow or pale-amber-colored mobile liquid steam distilled from Melissa officinalis, the resulting essential oil from this sweet-smelling herb has a light, fresh lemony aroma and enjoys the reputation of being one of the most frequently adulterated essential oils of the perfumery trade. Not easily distilled, the expensive, low-yielding oil (3.5 to 7.5 tons of plant material is needed to produce 1 pound of essential oil) is rarely pure. In fact, Melissa oil offered at low prices is likely not Melissa officinalis at all, but rather a blend of lemongrass and citronella oils and will not have the medicinal properties of the true essential oil. Buyer beware!

    OF INTEREST

Highly esteemed by the Greek Physician Paracelsus who deemed the extract of Melissa officinalis 'elixir of life' and believed it could completely revivify a person. Avincenna, the great Persian polymath of the 11th Century, agreed. Known for thousands of years in central and southern Europe, the local name for the plant in many countries is “heart’s delight”, and infusions of the dried herb were supposed to cure heart diseases, melancholy, nervous disorders and emotions and was used to strengthen and revive the vital spirit.

A medieval favorite, it was the main ingredient in “Carmelite Water” (used for headaches, neuralgia and to improve the complexion) along with lemon peel, nutmeg, coriander and angelica.
