White tea extract is the aqueous or acohol-based extract of white tea, the least refined of the three tea classifications: white, green and black. Because it is the least refined it has more of the active constituents of the plant, but as green tea is more common as an extract studies are made using green tea. A number of studies indicate that the possible skin benefits of green tea include: partial protection from UV damage, anti-inflammatory effects, skin matrix protection and others. The two key properties that make this extract an exquisite anti-aging ingredient are: antioxidant (ability to neutralize harmful oxygen free radicals), and the ability to inhibit matrix metalloproteinase (MMP). MMP are enzymes that degrade key proteins of the skin matrix, particularly collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles and loss of firmness.
