One of the most important cedarwood oils from the USA is the oil of Juniperus virginana, also known as Virginia cedar or “Southern Red Cedar”, which is obtained by steam distillation from the timber waste, sawdust and shavings of the tree.
Cedarwood is one of the most popular essential oils in aromatherapy, loved for its deep, rich and tenaceous woody, balsamic aroma. Interestingly, Virginian cedarwood is actually from trees of the same family as Juniper, yet they have a distinct Cedar aroma. The oil is a deep reddish orange in color, with a rich and full-bodied aroma. Although very similar, Virginian Cedarwood is a little higher-noted than the Texas Cedarwood.
