Listed on ingredient labels as (CI 77947), zinc oxide is an inorganic chemical compound found in nature as zincite. Refined zinc oxide is used in cosmetics as a white pigment and is one of the main ingredients of mineral makeup. It is also is highly prized as a non-chemical sunscreen. It is regarded as anti-microbial, wound-healing, and protects, heals and soothes the skin while acting as a physical UV barrier against the sun and other environmental irritants.
It is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB reflector that is approved for use as a sunscreen by the FDA and is completely photo-stable. When used as an ingredient in sunscreen, zinc oxide blocks both UVA (320–400 nm) and UVB (280–320 nm) rays of ultraviolet light. Zinc oxide is considered to be nonirritating, nonallergenic, and non-comedogenic.
NANOPARTICLES
Approved for use in cosmetics in the U.S., E.U. and Japan, Be Yourself Beautiful does not approve of nano-sized zinc oxide. Many sunscreens use nanoparticles of zinc oxide because such small particles do not scatter light and therefore do not appear white. There has been concern that they might be absorbed into the skin and recent studies have found that nanoparticles of ZnO that were applied to human skin via sunscreens could be traced in the blood.
