Often seen as a weed and closely related to chicory, dandelion has a long history of medicinal use. The leaves are used to purify the blood and aid in treating anemia, probably for their high iron content. The root is sold as a drug in Canada and is a powerful diuretic. Its active constituents include: terpenes, sterols, carotene, flavonoids, phenolcarboxylic acids and coumarin derivatives such as umbelliferone. It is also used to treat edema (water retention) and is a rich source of vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A, D, C, various B vitamins, iron, silicon, magnesium, zinc and manganese. These give dandelion valuable nutritive and antioxidant properties to the skin.
