Otherwise known as sundrops, the oil of the mature seeds of evening primrose contain approximately 7-10% gamma-linoleic acid (GLA), a rare essential fatty acid that is a cell regenerator, anti-inflammatory and is very emollient. It also contains terpenes and is astringent. Evening primrose oil is a popular ingredient in organic cosmetics. It acts on the mind to relieve anxiety and sedate. Medicinally, it is recommended for infantile eczema, painful breasts, arthritis, neurosis and reputedly lowers cholesterol. The roots and shoots can be eaten. At one time it was used to ease bruises and speed the healing of wounds. One of the common names of Oenothera, “Kings cure-all,” reflects the wide range of healing powers ascribed to this plant. Evening primrose oil is also shown to have sun protectant properties.
Evening Primrose oil is a wonderful addition to your carrier oil blends. It is used to support inflammatory skin conditions and helps deter premature skin aging. Evening Primrose oil contains one of the highest amounts of gamma-linolenic acid, an omega-3 essential fatty acid, of any plant. Omega-3s are very helpful in reducing inflammation.
It repairs sun damaged skin, conditions skin, hair and nails, and helps relieve PMS.
This cold-pressed, lightly refined oil can be ingested to supplement GLA in the diet.
ABOUT THE PLANT
The evening primrose is a tall, spiky plant that blooms only in the evening, hence its common name.
ABOUT THE OIL
Ingesting the oil Evening primrose oil is rich in fatty acids, in particular GLA. The GLA found in Evening Primrose oil is biologically important as it affects much of the enzyme activity in the body. Every process that takes place in the body is triggered by the action of various enzymes, including the production of prostaglandins. These hormone-like substances regulate many of our bodily functions. Prostaglandins are the end result of a chemical chain reaction that starts with essential fatty acids – primarily linoleic acid found in cold expeller-pressed oils.
Effective at 10% in a carrier blend.
OF INTEREST
North American Indian medicine men were the first to recognize its potential as a healing agent and used to brew the seed pods to make an infusion for healing wounds.
